![]() The hotel's Brown Derby night club would book big names like comedians Bob Hope, Buddy Hackett. Without the advantage of having a golf course, the owners concentrated their capital on the finest food and big names in entertainment to entice tourists. The resort became known for the wealthy patrons it attracted, competing against the larger establishments in the area. After making an additional $100,000 in renovations, the 473-room hotel opened as Charles and Lillian Brown's Hotel and Country Club with the phone number Hurleyville 150. The Appels had built the hotel in the early 1920s. In 1944 in the hamlet of Loch Sheldrake, New York within the Town of Fallsburg, Charles Brown, owner of several hotels, purchased the Black Appel Inn from the Appel family for US $70,000. The area became known as the Borscht Belt or the Jewish Alps. You have been warned.By the 1940s, Sullivan County, New York became a popular resort area in the Catskill Mountains north of New York City frequented primarily by middle and upper-class Jewish families living in the Northeast. The owner justs asks them to leave and he continues to get away with this horrific behavior. They cannot do anything to help you except give you an incident number on biz card, because it’s private property. The police stayed they come to this Motel often for same complaints about the young owner who lives in hotel and works front desk. By the way, police were called for other disgruntled guests at the time we were there. Hopefully it will go out of business because of all the illegal actions this guy does to scam innocent people just wanting to stay near the beach. This place scams your money and gets away with it. Amazing.that bad reviews go back to 2012 and this place is still in business! Don’t take your chances here. How does this guy/family stay in business, with so many bad reviews? Unfortunately my friend who booked didn’t read reviews first. It was the most horrible experience in my life and extremely unprofessional. We were not even there 1 hour and asked for a refund because we feared for our safety with the front desk guy on drugs. I am dead serious when I tell you this happened! We absolutely didn’t feel comfortable staying at this hotel. While Cursing F word.He warned me to ring it once more and see what would happen to me. I thought at one point he was going to attack me because he was inconvenienced when we had to ring the bell 3 times for assistance at the front desk. He was vulgar and rude and swearing as we checked in. This owner/front desk guy was drunk and on drugs when we arrived. BUT.the worst of it is how you are treated by the owner/front desk young balding man. It’s decieving because it’s near the ocean and the price seems right. I’m not just a disgruntled guest writing a bad review. This is a very honest review that I’m taking the time to write because innocent people need to be warned. ![]() Not even worth 1 star! Do not book a room here. Stay at this place at your own risk.īeware! This is more of a MOTEL than a hotel! Dirty and unsanitary. Again, the desk attendant did nothing about it. Thin walls and noisy neighbors: Well those "guests with some visitors" happened to be a party being thrown in the room across the hall from hours with constant people going in an out, door ajar, and loud music until 6AM. I mentioned that the lot was full to the same desk attendant and his response was "One of the guests has some visitors." I asked if anything could be done about that and he said no. We drove into Hermosa and specifically picked this hotel because of the "free onsite parking." When we returned to the room after dinner, the lot was full and I took the risk of getting a ticket where there is 2 hour parking from 10AM-2AM. Parking: While there is on-site parking, it is on a first come, first serve basis and there is no enforcement of non-hotel residents parking in the designated lot. Took over 20 minutes of waiting around and not really knowing what to do. Called again and this time we finally got someone to come out and check us in. We called the hotel number and heard the phone ringing from inside a room. Check-in: We arrived at 4:30PM for a room that we could check-in at 3:00PM. The room itself was fine (weird setup with two queens with the headboards directly facing each other). The appeal was the proximity to the beach and walkable to downtown.
